In the aftermath of the 2016 election, the fear and uncertainty in the air were palpable. Most predicted we were about to repeat yet another tragic history. In other parts of the world, repeated history had already begun to arise—just under a different name.
Will we always keep reacting the same way? Why can’t some see the patterns that keep continuing? Is there no other way to strive for anything different; maybe towards peace rather than conflict? Maybe peace is an illusion we flatter ourselves with.
This piece is about feeling the pattern approaching, starting with the mourning of a tragedy, then eventually moving forward, rebuilding, and progressing…only to then prepare for the next event.
“History repeats itself, but in such a cunning disguise that we never detect the resemblance until the damage is done.”—Sydney J. Harris
